“Affirm what you know to be true in your heart, and you will create that reality. Affirm that you are free, and strong, and attractive, and prosperous, and loving – and you will find, often in a remarkably short time, that your outer world will begin to change as a reflection of your changing inner consciousness.”

Many Mahatmas have enormous power and extraordinary energy to make things happen in spite of all the odds against their decision to undertake a major projects, organize a mammoth mass gathering, embark on an unprecedented event, change the course of history, instill spirituality among the atheists, impart vairagya among those who keep chasing the material world, and rally support the from unknown quarters.
Their sankalpa is so powerful that nothing will come in the way to achieve the unachievable. One such Mahatma is none other than Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji, the pontiff of Avadhuta Datta Peetham of Mysore. Our family had the rare opportunity to meet His Holiness in 1990 and our lives have not been the same.
We have seen many miracles of Sri Swamiji both in spiritual and physical world, observed closely the magnetic personality that attracted millions of people across the globe, participated in a number of activities and projects, understood the mysterious personality of Sri Swamiji where he can make the impossible possible, grasped the power of his vak shudhi – purity of  speech- in a number of occasions and followed with astonishment his unbelievable predictions affecting the cosmic consciousness. I want to narrate an event where his vak shudhi has successfully witnessed, where he made an event highly successful even though it was considered impossible, and where he assembled more than 200,000 in a place where he had devotees only in single digit number.

In 2014 Sri Swamiji announced to conduct massive Hanuman Chalisa chanting in Tenali in Andhra Pradesh on January 31, 2015. To our knowledge, there is only one devotees, who is a passionate devotee of Sri Swamiji with blind faith conducting Anaghavratham for over five years in the houses, Temples, and kalyanamantapam in Tenali and nearby villages. We all heard the saying blind faith can move the mountains and bring the Gods from heaven to earth to fulfill the desires of their devotees.

How Sri Swamiji selected Tenali to conduct the mass chanting of Hanuman Chalisa is equally a mindboggling story?  All the villagers and all the devotees across the globe were perplexed, surprised and astonished to hear Sri Swamiji asking only a handful of people to arrange the event with one lakh People.

Pujya Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji conducted massive Hanuman Chalisa Chanting Program in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. After Ninth chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa, Fransisca Burke of Guinness World Records announced that the participants count had reached 128, 918 and this event led by Sri Swamiji had become the world record for “Most People Chanting in a Single Venue”. She and Governor of Tamil Nadu Mr. Rosaiah presented the new Guinness World Records to Sri Swamiji. The audience cheered loudly and thunderous clapping filled all sixty acres where the chanting took place.  In fact the crowd, who came for from all over the country and abroad, swelled to more than 200,000 filling every inch of the 60 acres of land on Tenali -Burripalem Road.

Why Hanuman Chalisa is Selected?

Addressing the crowd Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji said that the mass chanting of Hanuman Chalisa has enormous power of bringing peace and prosperity in the globe. He also stressed the need on conducting similar mass prayers for the protection of our ancient heritage and culture which brought recognition to the spiritual wealth all across world. It is Lord Hanuman who helped Lord Rama to face all the difficulties and was able to clear all the troubles encountered by all the major characters in Ramayana.

Rosaiah presented the new Guinness World Records to Sri Swamiji. The audience cheered loudly and thunderous clapping filled the hall.Following the unprecedented success of mass chanting, in February 2015, Pujya Sri Swamiji urges that devotees participate in the "130 CRORE SGS HANUMAN CHALISA PARAYANA YAGNA" by regular chanting the sacred Hanuman Chalisa for peace, harmony and welfare of the humanity. Later in Sydney on April 4, Sri Swamiji said, “I really need 700 crores. I initially said 133 crores. If this new target of 700 crores is not reached, I will go away and disappear into the Gandhamadana Mountain.  You will lose Swamiji … This is everyone’s Yajna. To protect the earth we have to achieve this target. Huge perils are in store.”

The Hanuman Chalisa, authored by Sant Tulasidas Maharaj, consists of 40 verses and is famous globally, especially since it is believed to fulfill desires of those who recite it.  According to Sri Swamiji, “Hanuman Chalisa is a very ancient prayer dating back over 500 years. This particular prayer is especially chosen for chanting since the collective sound vibrations will create positive impact thereby promoting universal brotherhood, and aiding in the well-being of the entire universe.”  In recent times, scientific research has also revealed that sound waves formed while chanting are converted into electro-magnetic waves and potentially provide enormous positive impact on beings and atmosphere.

Buddhir balam yasho dhairyam
Nirbhayatvam arogatAm
AJAdyam vakpaTutvam ca
Hanumat smaraNAt bhavet

This is one of the simplest slokAs you will come across with a very simple meaning. (Buddhi) - intelligence, (balam) - strength, (yash) - fame, (dhairyam) - courage, (nirbhayatvam) - fearlessness,  (arogatAm) - disease-free health,  (ajADyam) - determination,  (vAk paTutvam ca) - and articulateness of speech, will all last forever  (bhavet) if you meditate (smaraNAt) on Lord Hanuman (hanumat) at all times.

Hanuman is the greatest devotee of Lord Rama who is a Chiranjeevi manifesting in different yugas removing the obstacles and creating positive energy to make the world peaceful. He is also described as Pavanputra, Anjaneya, Maruti, Bajaranga Bali, Mahabali, Sankat Mochana, Ramdoot, Kesarinanadan, Mahaveer and Balavanta.   The mass chant of Hanuman Chalisa prayer was a divine event. The cosmic power of the mass chant will bless Mother Earth and her inhabitants. May the almighty bless the participants and organizers of this divine event?

BENEFITS OF CHANTING HANUMAN CHALISA:

(Extracts of Sri Swamiji's speech at Bangalore on 29-Mar-15)

1) There will be a significant increase in Vidya (knowledge), strength (Bala), good buddhi and memory power of the individual. Children need to chant Hanuman Chalisa regularly as it boosts their memory power.

7) Hanuman Chalisa is a Maha mantra, a Maha yantra. The power contained in this Chalisa cannot be explained.

In a nutshell, this Hanuman Chalisa is a powerful medicine.

Mantra

Sri Swamiji is conveying the message that OM (Aum) is the seed mantra that evolved the very existence of the cosmos. Om is a mystical sound that is referred as pranava – meaning “to make a humming sound” which is the basis for creation.  According to Mandukya Upanishad the letter A represents Lord Brahma, who is responsible for all creation; letter U represents Lord Vishnu, who engages in balancing the Brahman with lotus; and letter M represents Lord Shiva who is responsible for disintegration and rejuvenation.

According to Katha Upanishad all the human desires are achieved whenever we live a life of consciousness and the austerities are achieved only though AUM.  It says:

"The one syllable [evākṣara, viz. Aum] is indeed Brahman. This one syllable is the highest. Whosoever knows this one syllable obtains all that he desires. "This is the best support; this is the highest support. Whosoever knows this support is adored in the world of Brahma." (1.2.16–17).

Mantras are basically the words of energy and power. The word Mantra consists of two words: man meaning “think” and trai meaning “to protect or free from bondage.” Mantra means the thought that frees one from samsara (bondage). Whoever recites the mantras are likely to negate the improper thinking, infuse positive attitude, kindle spirituality, and balance the relationship between body and soul. Mantras in general have the capacity to cure certain types of deceases, fulfill certain desires, dispel ignorance, fetch abundance, improve health, bring worldly success and instill vairagya. Different Mantra are developed over a period of time for different deities who are endowed with a set of characteristics, qualities, features, energies and potency.

Mantras are capable of purifying the individual body, mind and soul, it is equally capable of purifying the environment, communities and the cosmos itself – both material and nonmaterial. The sacred mantras. To make the mantras powerful and impact the cosmos, it must be pronounced, chanted or recited. Rig Veda say, “If these mantras of ours remain unspoken they will bring no joy, even on the most distant day.” In Kali Yuga, chanting of these mantras, or reciting the names of the deities is supposed to be the best way to create positive energy, purify the micro and macro level of the cosmos, create inner peace and repel or cushion the potential dangers that are knocking on the doors of the human race. Chanting of these holy names is believed to help one to cross the ocean of maya.

In Hindu religion, there are countless mantras found in various chalisas, kavachas, ashtottaranamas, arthis, and prayers. Different mantras invoke different deities. Intentional purpose of the prayer will determine the kind of mantra that is appropriate to the occasion and to the deity.  Sri Swamiji says that whenever you chant with full of devotion and total faith, and with the appropriate meaning these mantras such as Hanuman Chalisa have the power to descend the concerned deity to bestow the blessings and fulfill the desires. In the beginning there is a gap between the chanting and the deity associated with it. As we keep chanting regularly, repeatedly, constantly and persistently, the gap between the mantras and the deity decreases and expected results are realized. Chanting of Hanuman Chalisa propitiates Lord Hanuman who will descend in subtle form to remove the potential obstacles to achieve peace, harmony and welfare.

SOUND IS BRAHMAN

According to our Vedas "In the beginning was Brahman with whom was Vak, or the Word, and the Word is Brahman," The whole universe is sound, sound is God, and God is sound. That means sound is the creator of the universe. It is responsible for creating, sustaining, and destroying all life and all matter. Everything emanates from sound. There is sound everywhere. Speaking, dancing, walking, chirping, rain drops, galloping, wind, fire, musical instruments, gushing water, heartbeat, breathing, animals, trees, japa and even ajapa produce different levels of sounds, vibrations and waves.

The ancient mystics of the East developed different sounds form different patterns, creating the endless variety of shapes, sizes, and densities that are manifest all around us. They also regarded sound as a power that could be harnessed to create positive change. The Hindu and Buddhist sages, for example, repeated specific sound formulas, or mantras, to bring about a host of powerful effects, both external and internal. They taught that by reciting mantras to a specific deity, we can create within our consciousness the same vibration as that deity's. In essence, they saw the sacred words of the mantra as conduits that would bring spiritual energies into the world.

The ancient masters saw sound as the integrating factor of all life. They also knew what today's science is just beginning to prove—that when we apply certain sounds to an object or an organism, we can change its condition, for better or for worse.

Mantras are produce sounds that are filled with energy and power. These sounds produce various vibrations based on the intentions of the sounds.

Sri Swamiji on How Sounds penetrate

Sri Swamiji has been conducting healing and meditation music for nearly three decades following his experiment on the curative powers of music on a cancer patient. He developed or played a number of ragas that have different effect on the body and soul of the listeners.  After much trials and experimentation, He discovered that several ragas like Sriranjani, Keeravani, Amruta Varshini, Chakravakam, Hamsanandi have curative effects and a specific raga can heal the ailments such as cancer, heart, skin, psychosomatic problems and many others modern days urban oriented tensions. Swamiji says, "Raga Nilambari cures sleeplessness, Sri Raga aids in indigestion. For mental equipoise Sama raga is suggested. Dwajavanti quells nervous debilities, Music influences the cells, tissues, and nerves of the body. Tissue breakdown, cancerous growths, skin ailments, mental problems are healed to a great extent by music.”

Other cultures used sound for Healing

Many ancient cultures used the power of sound to heal the deceases, drive away the evil forces, and balance the nature to create harmony and peace.  According to research the Aborigines of Australia are the first known culture to heal with sound. Their ‘yidaki' (modern name, didgeridoo) has been used as a healing tool for at least 40,000 years. The Aborigines healed broken bones, muscle tears and illnesses of every kind using their enigmatic musical instrument. Interestingly, the sounds emitted by the yidaki are in alignment with modern sound healing technology. It is becoming apparent that the wisdom of the ancients was based on ‘sound' principles.

The Egyptian culture also appears to have a long tradition of vowel sound chant. A Greek traveler, Demetrius, circa 200 B.C., wrote that the Egyptians used vowel sounds in their rituals: ‘In Egypt, when priests sing hymns to the Gods they sing the seven vowels in due succession and the sound has such euphony that men listen to it instead of the flute and the lyre.'

In ancient Greece, Pythagoras (circa 500 BC) was considered the father of music therapy. Pythagoras was able to unravel the mysteries of musical intervals.  According to Iamblichus: ‘Pythagoras considered that music contributed greatly to health, if used in the right way…He called his method 'musical medicine'…To the accompaniment of Pythagoras' his followers would sing in unison certain chants…At other times his disciples employed music as medicine, with certain melodies composed to cure the passions of the psyche...anger and aggression.'

Other cultures such as Native Indians, Mayans, Celts, African tribes, Chinese, Buddhists, Christians and others appeared to have used sound for healing purposes.

The Impact of chanting Hanuman Chalisa!
What is the intention of chanting Hanuman Chalisa?

Sri Swamiji has a firm resolve and undaunted intention to take up this mammoth effort to make people chant not only to improve the individual health and improve their spiritual sphere, but more importantly for the wealth, welfare and wellbeing of the humanity as well as peace on earth.

Although Sri Swamiji is known for his Healing and Meditation music, why did he decide to conduct mass chanting? It appears that collective voice would be far more powerful to carry the message of world peace than any other musical instrument. Musical instruments and machines do not create the range of vibrations chanting voice can create.  Chanting is a dominant tool to heal ourselves and heal the environment through voice. In fact all mantras, chalisas and kavachas are intended not for the welfare of the individuals only, but for the welfare of the world.

Power of Chanting

Sri Swamiji is using the chanting of Hanuman Chalisa as a powerful tool to heal, transform, rejuvenate and replenish all the souls in the universe. His chanting was very powerful, intense, passionate, assertive, overpowering, penetrating, vibrating, and gripping. Chanting is intended to mitigate the troubles, terror, and problems at the international level; create positive vibrations through regular chanting; enrich the natural resources; avoid the abuse of mother earth; create positive vibrations for peaceful coexistence; instill peace, tranquility and spirituality; and help restore the ideology that sustains the very existence of the humanity. It was definitely meant to purify the oceans, mountains, forests, earth, sky, wind and the all the inhabitants of the earth. It appeared that his vocal chanting reverberated throughout the area by involving more than 200,000 people only to transmit the vibrations to the rest of the world for peace on planet earth.

From times immemorial the great rishis of India knew the power of chanting and connecting to the deity the mantras are addresses to.  They have transformative, curative, protective, beneficial, purifying, cleaning, rejuvenating and spiritual power.  These mantras are conceived and developed by these rishis who have heard them through sounds generated by the nature.  Swami Muktananda Says, ''Chanting is a magnet that draws God's power.”

Many people may not know the meaning and essence of the mantras and Chalisa chantings, but the sound vibrations created by these chantings transcend the mind, body and soul. The listeners and well as chanters get attracted to these vibrations as they create feeling of happiness, joy, satisfaction and peace of mind. These vibrations, although not visible, travel through waves across the communities and the world to generate harmony and peace.

Jonathan Goldman concludes, “When making the sounds, imagine that there is a beam of energy coming from your heart, your throat and your third eye. Imagine this energy coming out of your centers and meeting at the point of a triangle that is the beam of sacred sound. From your heart is coming Divine Love, from your throat is coming Divine Sound and from your third eye is coming Divine Wisdom as you make the sound. This visualization will enhance the sacred sound and make this work with overtoning even more effective.”

The Benefits of Chanting

Robert Gass, the author of “Chanting: Discovering Spirit in Sound” believes that the intentional chanting expands and deepens breathing resulting in mind-body vibration of the individual. He describes some of the benefits of chanting on a regular basis as follows:

•            Strengthen the immune system.
•            Oxygenate the blood as breathing deepens.
•            Lower blood pressure.
•            Reduce the production of stress-related hormones like cortisol.
•            Release endorphins, producing a feeling of wellbeing.
•            Increase levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps you get a good night's sleep

Chanting and Brain - Serotonin level

Chanting is found to balance the two side of the brain, clear the mind, and calm the brain from different kinds of moods that would result in stress. Research has shown that the chanting will boost the serotonin -    .  Summarized the research, Eric R. Baverman says that the chanting “is ideal for improving serotonin levels. It shuts off your thinking pattern, blocks negative thoughts, and slows the mind and body down in order to resynchronize. Best of all, you can access this serotonin-enhancing exercise whenever you want, where ever you want.” (P: 138; Younger (Thinner) You Diet, Rodale Inc., NY 2009). Chanting has been shown to reverse the depression and block the release of stress hormones. Sri Swamiji has assembled these many people to help themselves by balancing the mood levels and instilling calmness in the brain as well as the transmitting the serene vibrations to the animate and inanimate objects in the universe.

Chanting and Water

Sri Swamiji is aware of the research by Masuru Emoto of Japan who demonstrated that water molecules are actually affected by sound and our intention. Our ancient rishis have all along know that water is affected by sounds created by Chanting mantras, chalisas, Ashtoattara namasa and kavachas.  Water responds to the intention and textual meaning of the verses that are chanted. Emoto found that clean water looked like a snowflake—very geometric resembling a beautiful castle.  Polluted water looked filthy. After a priest has chanted over this water, it is photographed again. This time, the water looks like a snowflake—the sound and intentionality has restored it to its natural pristine harmonious shape. This is a known fact for many Hindus since the priests keep water in a kalasha and chant the mantras to infuse energy into the water. This water mixed with various herbs have a profound healing effect on the water. Since the research has shown consistently that positive intentional chanting or sound has beneficial effect on the mind, body and soul while the negative intentional chanting or sound can have destructive effect.

Since the research has shown consistently that positive intentional chanting or sound has beneficial effect on the mind, body and soul while the negative intentional chanting or sound can have destructive effect.  Since humans are made up of 70% water, what we think and what we chant affects us emotionally but physically. Similarly, since the planet is also 70% water these experiments have profound implications for the cosmos. According to few researchers that every country has a “vibrational field.” The country that promotes tolerance, nonviolence, peace, freedom and patience will have a positive “field,” while a country that promotes hatred, fear, terror, anger, mistrust, grief and torture lives in negative “field.” That means the sounds can be used either for destructive purposes or constructive purposes.

Since chanting of Hanuman Chalisa glorifies the virtuous character, bravery, devotion, compassion, heroism, selfless service, faithfulness, trust, wisdom and courage, it was the intent of Sri Swamiji to create positive vibrations fields across the globe and also help shrink the circumference of the negative vibrational field.

Micro to Macro level

To bring changes within the individuals who are chanting and create awareness about the potential, energy and power of individual consciousness whereby the will be soaked in the bliss of the vibrations generated by chanting the Hanuman Chalisa. The sounds of the chanting penetrates through the pores of the skin;  affects the cells in the body; influences the protons and particles of the brain; massages all the chakras to regain their balance and impacts the entire body. Within change is essential to experience the peace, silence and vairagya.

Sri Swamiji knows fully well that these 40 verses are not mere empty, meaningless sounds. Each verse is loaded with energy and has the potency to balance the negative and positive elements in the body and touches the ajapa sound to create balance to affect the health, and enhances the spirituality. Also the chanting is likely to efface the negativity, any mistakes and sins one may have committed, and revitalize the energy in various parts of the body.

What affects the individual will affect the cosmos, the earth.  As stated by Swami Vivekananda that “knowledge of the microcosm must lead to the knowledge of the macrocosm.”   Just like a living being, our ancient rishis regarded Earth as a living organ that breathes in and breathes out. It experiences similar feelings, happiness, torture, exploitation, abuse and cruelty as individuals. Mother earth needs to be protected, must be treated with respect, and made sacred.

I am reminded of the conversation Roar Sheppard, the author of “The Universe Speaks” with mother earth as to her impression of the pain, sorrow and frustration she was suffering. Earth says: “I am so ill to the extent that I can’t endure it. However, those who are ignorant of this pain account for majority of people on the Earth. Why are they so indifferent even though I, who is the ground that they step on as well as the basis that provide the growth of all lives and food to eat, am suffering this badly? I am bruised and wounded by the indifference and despicable deeds of human beings. I feel like giving up any expectation or hope.”(P: 3)

Chanting of Hanuman Chalisa 7 billion times intended to show that Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji is concerned about the pain, the wounds and the bruises the Mother earth is subjected to by people who inhabit her. Chanting is intended to purify, rejuvenate and calm the mother earth. It has it’s own consciousness, own mind and own defensive mechanism just like any human.  The mass chant of Hanuman Chalisa prayer was a divine event. The cosmic power of the mass chant will bless Mother Earth and her inhabitants. May the almighty bless the participants and organisers of this divine event.Carl Sagan recognizes and acknowledges what our rishis knew by saying, “The Hindu religion is the only one of the world’s great faiths dedicated to the idea that the cosmos itself undergoes an immense, indeed infinite, number of deaths and rebirths. It is the only religion in which the time scales correspond, to those of the modern scientific cosmology.” Mother earth is a living entity. Her destiny is our destiny. Her future is our future. Her welfare is our welfare. Whenever we attempt to exploit her abundant natural resources, we are paving the way for our own destruction. Now it is the responsibility of every human being to help Mother Earth to regain her serenity, tranquility, beauty, and sacredness. Chanting of Hanuman Chalisa 7 billion times would be in the right direction to cure all the ills mother earth is facing.
