Why Cow is Sacred? Scientific Evidence Reveals the Benefits of Cow Products

07 Jan 2016 716 Views

Bhaarat Today TV station in Hyderabad organized a discuss on the topic “Gauraksha Sarvajagadraksha”(Protection of Cow is equal to Protection of the entire universe) on December 8, 2015 by a group of five panelists who have been working fearlessly to preserve and protect the cows from the slaughter houses; who are managing Gaushalas; who have highlighted the unique characteristic of Godly nature of cow;  and who have documented the scientific evidence of the Panchagavyas (five elements) that have contributed for the health and the welfare of the humanity.  Before we examine each of the five products of the cow, let us look at the characteristics of Desi cow and how it differs from other cows so that we may appreciate the uniqueness of the Desi cow and why Hindus consider her Gomata (Mother Cow).

Desi Cow is the only divine living being that has a Surya Ketu Nadi (vein connected to sun) passing through her backbone. It is believed to that this nadi absorbs the medicinal essence from the sun.AsSurya Ketu Nadi interacts with solar rays, gold salts in her blood are produced. Thus the cow’s milk, butter and ghee assume golden hue. Desi cow is distinguished with hump which is absent from other cows. They also possess Dewlap (prominent specific fold of skin hanging below neck). This dewlap gives immunity power to cow and cow products. Dung of Vedic is always covered by thin membrane. It always has a pleasing odor. Dung of other cows is of liquid consistency. Their dung does not have a membrane to make it semi-solid. The odor of cow dung of non-desi cowsis repulsive, it smells awful. Desi cows comparatively have long ears.

Most of the Desi cows produce A2 milk while other cows give A1 give. This milk is considered nutritious, rich in alpha-2 casein proteins which is useful for healthy living. Based on research conducted by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal, the superiority of A2 milk in Indian breeds is established.  Of the 22 desi breeds, it found A2 allele to be 100 per cent available in the five high-yielding milk breeds – Red Sindhi, Gir, Rathi, Shahiwal and Tharparkar – while the rest of desi cows have 94 percent A2 allele. In non-desi cows, they found very low A2 allele.

I was given the responsibility of presenting and discussing the benefits of Panchagavyas of cows based on the evidence accumulated by the scientific studies done across the globe. Some of these scientific studies are conducted on Desi cows and others on non-desi cows. The interview can be accesses in YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w42nuVPH0FE.

Panchagavya Benefits

There are five products we receive from Cow: milk, urine, dung, butter and ghee. Each ingredient produces remarkable benefits to the health of all living beings and environment. Panchagavya comes from the Sanskrit “panch” meaning five and “gavya” meaning cow. The main ingredients of Panchagavya are cow dung, cow urine, cow milk, cow curd, and cow ghee. Different recipes are developed by different scientists as well as by farmers themselves. Some people make the Panchagavya by mixing all these five ingredients as well as water of tender coconut, bananas, toddy juice and sugarcane. This mixture is said to reduce the odor.

According to research, it is found that Panchagavya stimulates the production of antibodies in animals, thus building the immune system. In humans, it has been reported to increase appetite, heal wounds, and cure number of deceases diseases like Psoriasis and white patches. These results support our ancient scriptures such as Kashyapa Samhita, Charaka Samhita, SushrutaSamhita, Gad Nigraha and Ras Tantra Saara who have applauded and documented the significance of Panchagavya in human life.  Regular consumption of Panchagavya results in the removal of poisons from the body, avoid food addiction, cure the side effects of alcohol and tobacco consumption and strengthen immune system.

It is well presented in this verse:

yatvagasthi gatam papam dehe tishthti mamke

                prasnat panchgavyasya dahasagnirivendhnam

Meaning: From skin to bones, whatever sins (diseases) are in my body, are destroyed by Panchagavya just as fire destroys fuel.

Urine Benefits

Cow is considered the treasure of medicines. The cow urine is capable of curing several curable and incurable diseases. Scriptures such as Atharvana Veda, Charaka Samhita, Rajni Ghuntu, Vridhabhagabhatt, Amritasagar, Bhavaprakash, Sushruta Samhita describe the health benefits cow urine.   Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has conducted a lot of research in the past few years and reached at the conclusion that it is capable of curing diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, heart attack, blockage in arteries, fits, cancer, aids, piles, prostrate, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, ulcer, acidity, constipation, gynecological problems, ear and nose problems, abortion and several other diseases.

Scientific research proved that the consumption Cow urine is associated with the cure of number of diseases, especially cancer. This claim is validated four times over by patents granted by the US and China. On April 8, 2009 granted patent (100475221) while the US patent (7718360) was granted on May 18, 2010. The two patents have certified that the composition is useful for protecting and/or repairing DNA from oxidative damages. DNA oxidation is known to cause cancer.  Earlier, two more patents were issued by US for cow urine distillate (Patent numbers 6410059 and 6896907).

Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra was started in 1996 with a mission to establish “firm scientific basis of eco-friendly cow-centred economics.”

“The organisation holds several patents on cow urine over its antibiotic, anti-fungal and bio-enhancer effects, and over its anti-allergic, anti-infective, nutrient and anti-cancer properties, as well as its use as an anti-oxidant and one on cow urine causing apoptosis or programmed cell death. GVAK also holds a patent in China for the role of cow urine in protecting and/or repairing DNA damages.” The Indian Express, July 22, 2015)

Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has conducted a lot of research in the past few years and reached at the conclusion “that it is capable of helping in diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, heart attack, blockage in arteries, fits, cancer, AIDS, piles, prostrate, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, ulcer, acidity, constipation, gynecological problems, ear and nose problems, abortion and several other diseases.”

“The patents have validated our results,” NEERI’s acting Director Tapan Chakravarti told media persons at a press conference here. “Many patients, some of them terminally ill with diseases like cancer, have come to the Go-vigyan Kendra for treatment and have claimed to have benefited from Gomutra Ark.”

The UK, journalMirror has written an article on the benefits of Cow urine. Many people claim that cow urine can be successfully used to treat cancer, diabetes, tumors, tuberculosis, stomach problems and much more. They also claim that drinking cow pee is the only solution for treating baldness. (January 1, 2015) “

Only two things are pure in this universe, in this world. One is the water from the Holy Ganges river and the other is urine from mother holy cow,” Ramesh Gupta, a Hindu priest, said.

“Cow urine has been mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures. No one can doubt the good effects it has on the human body. It is a divine gift from God.”

Followers like Gupta, however, insist that urine from every cow cannot be beneficial.

“The cow, whose urine one has to drink, should be a virgin – she must not have delivered a calf. Also, the urine is to be collected just before sunrise – that urine has the best effect,” he said.

Mohanty et al, summarized the findings of the scientific research on the health effects of urine in International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2014) as follows: “Some of the diseases that are proven to be cured by cow urine are Cough, Dysmenorrhea, Migraine or headache, Constipation, Thyroid and Skin diseases like eczema, ringworm, and itching, Acne, Cancer, Heart Diseases, Musculoskeletal Disorders, Male Sexual Disorders, AIDS, Diabetes Mellitus, Blood Disorders, Respiratory Disorders, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Endocrine Disorders, Gynecological Disorders, Ophthalmic Disorders, Psychiatric Disorders, Urological Disorders, Asthma, Kidney Shrinkage, Hepatic Disorders and Cancer etc.”

The Minister of Cow Affairs in Rajasthan, Mr. Otaram Devasi, stated that “We have already started making disinfectant from gaumutra and at the Sawai Man Singh hospital [in Jaipur] it is being used in place of Phenyl.”

Cow dung

Cow dung has antiseptic, anti-radioactive and anti-thermal properties. When we coat the walls and clean the floors of house with cow dung, it protects the dwellers. In 1984, gas leak in Bhopal killed more than 20,000 people. Those living in houses with cow dung coated walls were not affected. Atomic power centers in India and Russia even today use cow dung to shield radiation. When we burn cow dung, it balances atmospheric temperature and kills germs in the air. We can also reduce acid content in water by treating it with cow dung.

Dr. K N Uttam, Associate Professor in Physics Department, talked about the nuclear radiation and ways to prevent it. He said some traditional Indian practices could help minimize the effects of Gamma rays, the most harmful rays emitted in nuclear radiation. “Traditional methods like keeping onions in pockets and applying a layer of Cow Dung on the outside walls of houses absorb the harmful gamma rays,” Uttam said. “Cow dung, in fact, can absorb all the three rays — alpha, beta and gamma. Among these, alpha rays cannot penetrate the layers of cloths whereas beta falls after hitting the same but the Gamma rays penetrate the body tissue and is the most harmful,” he added. If the outer walls of houses are coated with thick layers of cow dung, it will absorb the gamma rays and in turn people would be safe, said Uttam who has worked in the ministry of science and technology and MHRD.

“Walking on fresh cowdung is very healthy," KesariGumat, a researcher insisted. "It kills all the germs and bacteria and heals wounds. And dry cowdung is a great scrub to get rid of dead skin and improve blood circulation." Research studies have shown that the Cow dung has a significant anti-radiation property.

It is often stated that the Russians have gone to the extent of incorporating a layer of Cow dung (in-between two layers of metal) in the Space shuttles to protect the cosmonauts from the harmful cosmic radiations. The same property (anti-radiation) of the cow dung has been proved during the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, where the performance of Agnihotra using this Cow dung and Cow ghee was effective enough to completely eliminate the nuclear radiation effect. And the same effect was observed in Bhopal during the chemical catastrophe.

Erik Coats, University of Idaho associate professor of civil engineering, and his team of scientists have been conducting research on the potential use of cow dung to produce electricity as well as produce biodegradable plastics. Based on their research, they concluded that “Through a process called anaerobic digestion, bacteria can convert manure to a methane-rich biogas, which can be burned in an engine generator to produce electricity.” Similarly, this research group developing a technology to produce biodegradable plastic.

They stated that “Our process uses the unique capabilities of naturally occurring bacteria to ferment manure and then convert the fermentation products to a plastic known as polyhydroxyalkanoate, or PHA.” This PHA is similar to the petroleum based plastic but this plastic is biodegradable. Cow dung is going to save the mother earth being a polluted planet. This kind of biodegradable plastic can reduce the greenhouse emissions and decrease the ground and water pollution. They also prevent amplification of heat generated by oil based plastics that usually causes changes in the temperature and the precipitation.

Cow Milk

Charaka Samhita lists ten qualities of cow milk that help promote good health: Sweetness; cold, soft; unctuous, oily; density, thick; smoothness; slimness, stickiness; heavy; slowness; and calming, clarity. These are also the properties of Ojas (vigor). Since milk has the identical properties, it is expected to promote Ojas among people who consume milk.

Milk is considered an elixir. Cow’s milk promotes health, develops brain tissues, and improves intelligence. Of course, in many religious ceremonies and deity worship, people use mainly cow’s milk and its products to prepare the sweets and other dishes. The numbers of products that are made from cow milk include yoghurt, butter, ghee and fresh cheese (paneer).

The Indian breed Desi Cow produces A2 milk, which contains less Betacosmophorine-7 (BCM-7), is healthier than A1 milk of cows of other kinds of cows. Calcium found Desi milk prevents colon cancer, fights breast cancer, prevents blood clotting and regularize bold pressure. It also reduces the PMS symptoms, prevents migraine headaches, prevents obesity among children, helps reduce weight among adults.

Cow milk is a source of many vitamins and nutrients. For centuries, people used to drink milk to help keep the skin soft. Since it contains amino acid, it keeps the skin moisturized. In order to keep the bones strong, to prevent osteoporosis, and also to prevent tooth decay and cavities, drinking milk is suggested since it is the main source of calcium.

Derman et al conducted a study in Turkey which reveals that “There was a statistically significant negative relationship between milk consumption and the following: abdominal bloating, cramps, craving for some foods and increased appetite.” Since cow milk is rich in calcium, milk consumption is believed to fight against gout, beneficial against breast cancer, help in oxidation of body fat and thus, decrease the secretion of parathyroid hormone, and provide other health benefits.

COW Ghee

According to Charaka Samhita, Cow ghee promotes memory, intellect, digestive power, semen, Ojas, Kapha and fat. It also alleviates Vata, Pitta, toxic conditions, insanity, and emaciation. It is considered auspicious and also best among all the unctuous (oily) substances. It increases thousand times in potency and develops manifold utilities. Similarly Bhavaprakash states, “Ghee is sweet in taste and cooling in energy, rejuvenating, good for the eyes and vision, kindles digestion, bestows lustre and beauty, enhances memory and stamina, increases intellect, promotes longevity, is an aphrodisiac and protects the body from various diseases.” (6.18.1) According to Peter Malakoff and Gilda Zucolella, “Ghee builds the aura, makes all the organs soft, builds up the internal juices of the body-Rasa, which are destroyed by aging and increases the most refined element of digestion-Shukra or Ojas, the underlying basis of all immunity and the “essence of all bodily tissues”.

Maya Tiwari calls Ghee the “single most Ojas producing food on earth”. Ghee is known to increase intelligence-Dhi, refine the intellect-Buddhi and improve the memory-Smriti. Although Ghee kindles or increases the digestive fire- Agni, on which all nutrition depends, it does so without aggravating Pitta- the elemental functioning of fire within the body. In fact, Ghee cools the body, essential in much of today’s world in which everything is overheating. Ghee is also prescribed to reduce anxiety, depression, dementia, insanity, epilepsy and other disorders of consciousness. Cow ghee is preferred to light up the lamps in Hindu Temples as well as at homes and also use it when performing the Homa.  Light generated by Ghee lamp is more beautiful and brilliant than any other light. This light is also said to ward off negativity and evil influence and promote sattvic attitude.

Cow ghee is also widely used in Panchakarma treatment.  Ghee is considered the best substance for preparing the body for internal detoxification (Panchakarma) as per Ayurveda.  The best remedy for diseases caused by aggravated Pitta and Vata doshas is the use of ghee.  It is used internally and externally to detoxify the body and mind.  While doing bid massage, apply ghee all over the body, rubbing into head, chest, limbs, shoulders, spine, joints and orifices. The deep massage allows the qualities of Ghee to penetrate directly into the deeper tissues through the pores of the external body.  Patients are given certain amount of ghee each morning to purify the internal digestive system.

Purana Ghrita – OLD cow ghee (more than one-year-old) is useful inintoxication, epilepsy, fainting, emaciation, schizophrenia, insanity, remnant poisons and fever. It is also used relieve pain in the ear, head as well as female genital tract.

SPONSOR A COW; PREVENT CO SLAUGHTER

It is time to honor, respect and revere our Gomata. Let us not put her to untold misery by sending her to the slaughterhouses through our greediness, negligence and indifference. All Hindus need to work together to protect her from being slaughtered, stop the illegal transportation of cows, shut down all the slaughterhouses, emphasize the virtues of divine nature of the cows, advocate the use of cow products for the welfare, health and wealth of the nation.

Also work together to stop the export of beef and also stop the subsidy given to the exporters of the beef. Then let us all establish Goshalas or Gomata Sanctuaries so that the cows can be sent to these places and reduce the chances of cows being transported to slaughterhouses. Let us sponsor a cow to make sure that she is housed and fed properly and treat her as a mother that rightfully deserves respect and reverence. SPONSOR A COW
